History

Applied Physics Technologies is an outgrowth of decades of thermionic and field-emission research conducted at Linfield Research Institute (LRI). Recognizing the increasing demand for technologically sophisticated electron emission devices, LRI researchers William Mackie, PhD and Gary Cabe established the company in 1995, first setting up shop in an outbuilding used to process honey produced by Dr. Mackie’s apiary. Driven by increasing demand from industrial, governmental, and academic customers, APT moved to its current 10,000 square foot manufacturing facility in 1999. In 2001, APT acquired its boride line from FEI Company. Recognizing the value of APT’s technology and manufacturing capabilities, Hitachi High-Technologies acquired APT in 2019. In 2021, APT expanded to Hillsboro, Oregon with APT Labs, a 10,000 square foot facility dedicated exclusively to research and new product development.
